National Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Mobility Nepal

The National Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Mobility is a national network of professional organizations, charity organizations, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and private organizations working in the fields of road safety, related to data, policies, and practices to ensure the safety of human life on the roads across Nepal. It is also the umbrella organization of over two dozen organizations that are involved in safe, sustainable, affordable, and accessible mobility for all.

Vision: Safe, sustainable, affordable, accessible & smart mobility for all. This vision reflects the Alliance’s long-term dream of a Nepal where everyone—irrespective of age, gender, or ability—has the freedom to move safely and affordably. By placing sustainability and smart mobility at the heart of its vision, the Alliance emphasizes not just safety but also the importance of eco-friendly solutions, digital integration, and future-ready infrastructure in Nepal’s transport system.

Mission: Making the roads and public transport safer through advocacy and wide professional engagement for the safer infrastructures and vehicles, safety of disabled & vulnerable road users, public transport users, and post-crash response system; and promotion of drive tourism, electric vehicles, auto-land, driving education, smart city and sustainable mobility to build a prosperous Nepal. This mission highlights the Alliance’s wide-ranging approach. It recognizes that road safety is not only about preventing accidents but also about making the entire system of mobility safer—from the design of roads and vehicles, to ensuring that people with disabilities and vulnerable road users such as children, pedestrians, and cyclists can travel with dignity and security. Furthermore, the mission expands into future-looking sectors like electric vehicles, smart cities, and tourism, showing the Alliance’s commitment to both safety and economic prosperity.

Values: Collaborative • Informative • Independent • Transparency. These values form the backbone of how the Alliance operates. Collaboration ensures that no stakeholder is left behind and that expertise is pooled from multiple sectors. Being informative emphasizes the importance of data-driven action and knowledge-sharing. Independence ensures that the Alliance maintains objectivity in its work, standing for the safety of the people above all other interests. Finally, transparency builds trust with its members, the government, and the general public, reinforcing credibility and accountability.

The major objectives of the Alliance are centered on three broad areas of impact. The first is to advocate for safe, sustainable, smart, and environmentally friendly infrastructure related to transportation and mobility. This includes lobbying for better road designs, improved public transport systems, and environmentally conscious planning. The second objective is to promote accessible mobility for vulnerable road users, ensuring that everyone enjoys the fundamental right to mobility without fear of injury or discrimination. The third objective is to contribute to Nepal’s national development and economic growth by supporting safer transportation and promoting cross-border connectivity, drawing on international best practices and proven global models. Together, these objectives ensure that the Alliance is not only focused on safety but also aligned with broader national priorities.

Key Areas of Work: The National Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Mobility actively facilitates networking, knowledge and skill sharing, as well as policy development, planning, and advocacy initiatives among its members. The Alliance also engages in strong partnerships and collaborations with social organizations, professional associations, and government bodies to achieve its mission. Each of these areas of work has its own depth and importance, allowing the Alliance to remain dynamic and impactful.

Networking: One of the core functions of the Alliance is to serve as a hub for networking. This networking is not limited to its own members but also extends to government agencies, parliamentarians, and international organizations working on issues related to road safety and injury prevention. Acting as a national bridge, the Alliance connects different stakeholders, enabling them to work collectively towards common goals. By building these connections, it helps bring consistency and alignment in the efforts being made across Nepal. Networking also strengthens advocacy by ensuring that road safety concerns are raised at the highest levels of government and that policies are translated into action on the ground.

Knowledge and Skill Sharing: Another vital role of the Alliance is to create and maintain a platform where information, data, and experiences can be shared not only among its members but also with the general public. It is in the process of developing a resource center that will serve as a repository of valuable information related to transport safety and mobility. This resource center will be open and accessible, providing research materials, publications, and case studies to policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. Beyond just storing knowledge, the Alliance also conducts training and provides skills to its members, stakeholders, and policymakers so that they can make informed decisions. In this way, it functions as a research and development hub where contemporary challenges in road safety are studied, awareness campaigns are designed, and innovative solutions are tested and shared widely.

Policy, Planning, and Advocacy: The Alliance plays a proactive role in policy discussions and planning at the national level. It develops prevention strategies aimed at minimizing risks on roads and advocates for the timely introduction and implementation of effective policies. By working closely with policymakers, legislators, and government officials, it ensures that safer road policies are not just passed but also enforced. This work extends to advocacy around injury prevention, trauma care, and post-crash response systems, which are essential for reducing fatalities and long-term harm. By combining research evidence with on-ground experiences from its members, the Alliance strengthens its voice in policy advocacy and ensures that national road safety standards are aligned with global best practices.

In summary, the National Alliance for Safe and Sustainable Mobility is more than just a network; it is a collective movement dedicated to reshaping the way Nepal views and manages mobility. It is committed to saving lives, ensuring access, building safer infrastructure, and integrating smart, sustainable systems into the country’s transportation future. By fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge, and pushing for strong policies, the Alliance envisions a Nepal where roads are not sites of tragedy but pathways to opportunity, growth, and prosperity.
